What to Expect
Initial Phone Consultation
In order to schedule your 15 minute-phone consultation, please send me an email or contact me by telephone at 212-500-1224.
The purpose of the phone consultation is for me to hear a bit about your concerns and current situation. I will ask you some questions over the phone, and you will have an opportunity to have your questions answered. We will discuss fees and scheduling. At the end of the phone consultation, I will provide suggestions for next steps. If we determine we might be a good fit, we will schedule an initial intake assessment.
Prior to your first Appointment
I will send you an arrival packet via our secure online system. The packet includes the intake questionnaire and consent forms. I recommend completing these online before our first appointment so that I have sufficient time to review them in advance of our meeting. However, you may wish to complete the forms in person during the first session. Please arrive a few minutes early to the initial appointment to get oriented.
Initial Intake Assessment Session(s)
The initial intake assessment session(s) will follow up from the phone consultation, to learn more about your concerns, goals for treatment, and your background. This assessment is scheduled for two hours and can be done in a single two-hour session, or split across two one-hour sessions. At the end of the assessment I will share my impressions and recommendations. We will then put together a personalized plan for treatment and schedule a time for regular ongoing sessions.
A large body of psychological research has shown that a good therapeutic relationship is an important predictor of treatment success. I view the initial intake sessions as a time to get to know one another and decide if we are a good fit. I encourage my patients to consider whether they feel comfortable with me as a therapist, and I will endeavor to make sure I’m the best person to help with your particular concerns. If your needs do not align with my expertise, I will help connect you with another provider in the community who is better suited to help.
Ongoing Sessions
Ongoing therapy sessions are 50 minutes. I typically see patients once or twice weekly, and the overall duration of your treatment will depend on the nature of your presenting problems and treatment goals. We will decide together on a course of treatment, and will discuss how long that is likely to take. I believe it is important to continuously monitor progress toward your goals, and to reevaluate treatment duration if necessary.
I prefer to set a weekly appointment time; however, if you are unable to schedule on a regular basis at the same time weekly due to an irregular schedule, I will do my best to work with you to accommodate your schedule. More or less frequent sessions can be arranged, as can longer appointment times.
