Frequently Asked Questions

Rates for therapy sessions are $350 for a 50-minute session. The two-hour intake is prorated accordingly. You may be able to get partial reimbursement through your insurance company (see below). Payment is due in full at the time of each service and can be made by cash, check, or major credit card.

Like most private practitioners in New York City, I am an out-of-network provider. That means I do not accept any insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare directly. However, I make the reimbursement process as simple as possible by providing all the necessary paperwork, including receipts and diagnosis codes, in a timely fashion.

The first step is to call your insurance provider and ask about their policy on out-of-network behavioral health care. You will need to know (1) the amount of your deductible, (2) what percentage of behavioral health services they will reimburse for out-of-network providers, and (3) whether there are limits on the number of visits per calendar year. Should you choose to come to me for treatment, you will be required to pay for each session in full at the time of service.

In my experience, most patients are reimbursed for 50% to 80% for the cost of their sessions if they have out-of-network mental health coverage. It is helpful to call individual insurance providers to determine level of coverage in advance. Many patients are pleasantly surprised.

At the end of each month I will provide a statement of services in person or via email. This form should be submitted to your insurance company, along with a health insurance claim form, to receive payment. Most insurance carriers process each claim like any other medical claim.

The length of treatment depends on a number of factors, such as treatment goals, nature of the problem, and engagement in treatment. For many presenting problems, a short-term course of therapy (10-20 sessions) is appropriate. In some cases, particularly if a problem is very longstanding, a longer course of treatment may be necessary to provide lasting gains. Typically, benefits are experienced more quickly when patients are able to maintain weekly appointments and practice skills outside of session.

I typically see patients once or twice weekly, depending on the nature of their problem and the treatment plan. As you experience improvement and progress toward your goals, sessions can be spaced out to every other week or less frequently. There is also the option for “maintenance” sessions, where you come into therapy once per month or on an as needed basis, such as when coping with difficult transitions or acute stressors.

I prefer to set a weekly appointment time; however, if you are unable to schedule on a regular basis at the same time weekly due to an irregular schedule, I will do my best to work with you to accommodate your schedule.

The initial intake assessment is scheduled for two hours and can be done in a single two-hour session or split across two one-hour sessions. Ongoing therapy sessions are 50 minutes.

Appointments are offered on weekdays. I will do my best to find a time that accommodates your schedule.

Cancellations or rescheduling of appointments must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment to avoid a full fee charge. This allows me to offer your appointment time to another patient. Medical emergencies or other extenuating circumstances are taken into consideration for rescheduling requests.

Psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medication, though I often work collaboratively with psychiatrists and other physicians, when patients wish to pursue both medication and psychotherapy.

Absolutely. Confidentiality is a hallmark of the patient-therapist relationship and something I take seriously. It is essential that you feel that you have a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings. Unless you give me written permission to speak to other individuals (such as another healthcare provider), I will keep your information private. There are certain legal and ethical limits to confidentiality that I will review with you during our initial session.

The first step is scheduling a complimentary 15-minute phone call with me so that we can discuss your needs and determine if the services I provide would be a good fit for you. You can schedule your phone call on this website through the Contact page, or by emailing or calling me directly.
